Solution

This easy example starts with 18 digits, so 18 cells are empty. The thick lines mark the six 2×3 boxes.

Look at row 1, column 1. Its row already has 1, 3, 4, 5 and 6. That leaves only 2, so 2 goes there.

Every digit you place rules itself out for the rest of its row, column and box, which narrows down the cells around it. The finished grid is on the right.

Mini Sudoku tips

  • Start with the digit that has the fewest places left, usually one that already appears most often.
  • A 2×3 box shares two rows and three columns with its neighbours. A digit in a box's top row goes in the bottom row of the box beside it.
  • Look for a cell where only one digit fits (naked single) before guessing anything.
  • With only six digits, "where can the 4 go in this row?" is often faster than "what goes in this cell?".
